damocracy

We recently watched a video called Damocracy, which showed us how some governments were building dam’s despite protests from locals and the knowledge of the devastating impact it could have on the environment. We were supposed to create two scenarios of how we thought the future could be with these projects. Here are mine:

Scenario 1:

The governments in these two places will continue to do exactly what they are doing now- ignoring their citizens and their basic rights and just keep doing whatever makes them the most money and gives them the most benefit. They will ignore the fact that doing whatever they want will possibly displace thousands of their citizens and could potentially kill off thousands of species, yet they will disregard that because their own financial or personal gain outweighs all the other effects.

Scenario 2:

The government will take the people’s opinions and needs into mind when making a decision that so greatly affects them and the environment they reside in and either change their plan for the dam’s and make it so that it does not impact these communities in such a big way. Or, another option is that they completely stop the building of the dam and find another way to harvest the energy they need. This would be the best scenario, because all the dam may be great energy- but that one positive does not outweigh the many negatives that the creation of a dam like this would cause.
